About the Portland Community Rowing Association
Welcome to the Launch of Rowing in Portland, Maine!
The Portland Community Rowing Association, a501(c)(3) non-profit organization,
is focused on providing recreational and competitive rowing for youths and adults in the Portland, Maine area.
Currently, the PCRA exists as a collection of rowers who would like to see a home and "home team" for the sport
of rowing in Portland. Our goal is to build a participant base and establish a dedicated site to launch rowing
shells from. This site will allow the PCRA to offer Learn to Row events and coach led practices, thus promoting the
sport in both a safe and enjoyable way.
The PCRA's primary purpose is to further the sport of rowing in the
greater Portland area. The scope of our activities will extend from the training of people who have never rowed before to
the training and development of competitive rowers. The Association will offer programs for recreational and competitive
rowing for adults of all ages and kids (ages 14-18).
All PCRA participants will
be expected to take part in work parties, meetings, and equipment maintenance. We will
offer everything from introductory classes for all to programs specifically designed for rowers looking for competive and
recreational opportunities.
Why Rowing?
If you think
skimming over water under your own muscle power would be a blast, then rowing is for you. It’s all about balance, timing
and teamwork. Slipping into a boat and rowing solo or with a team develops muscle power, endurance and great
friendships.
Boats are propelled through the water by pulling on one
oar (sweeping) or by pulling on two oars (sculling). All major muscle groups are used and the constant effort produces an
excellent cardiovascular workout. In addition to the physical benefits of the sport, rowers must learn to 'pull together'
in crews of two, four or eight (when they are not in a single shell).
